For most travellers Dalaman is not a final destination but a starting point: the airport that opens the door to the finest stretches of Turkey’s turquoise coast. Fethiye, the Blue Lagoon of Ölüdeniz, the rock tombs and turtle beach of Dalyan, the Saklikent gorge, they all lie within driving range but scattered. That is exactly why a rental car is almost indispensable here. Do you need a car from Dalaman?

Almost certainly. Dalaman is little more than an airport with a small town; the real beauty lies around it, and public transport between those places is slow or non-existent. A transfer to your hotel is also pricey, and the moment you want to make day trips you are stuck without a car. With your own vehicle you drive straight to Fethiye or Ölüdeniz, and have the freedom to do Dalyan, Saklikent or the Lycian coast at your own pace.

Picking up at Dalaman Airport (DLM)

Dalaman (DLM) is a compact holiday airport. Most companies have a desk in or beside the terminal, or a short shuttle to a nearby depot. Since you almost always make a long drive straight away here (an hour to Fethiye is normal), it pays to pick up rested and check the car calmly before you set off.

At pick-up, watch the fuel policy (full-to-full is fairest), photograph any existing damage before you drive off, and ask explicitly how the toll is settled.

The best routes from Dalaman

The classic base is Fethiye or Ölüdeniz, with the spectacular Blue Lagoon and paragliders drifting down from Babadağ. Nearby lie the ghost village of Kayaköy and the Saklikent gorge. Dalyan the other way is delightfully quiet, with a boat past the rock tombs to the turtle beach. If you want a taste of the Lycian coast, drive on to Kalkan and Kas.

How does the toll work in Turkey?

Turkish motorways (otoyol) use a fully electronic toll system, HGS, without toll booths. You drive through and the system reads a device on the windscreen. Along the turquoise coast you mainly drive on toll-free roads; only on long inland connections do you meet the otoyol. The rental car normally already has an HGS device; the toll is settled afterwards by the rental company, usually via your credit card or the deposit, sometimes with a service fee on top. Ask at pick-up how it is arranged and keep your contract.

When is renting in Dalaman cheapest?

Prices follow the tourist season. In winter and early spring daily rates are lowest; from May it rises, peaking in July and August. If you are flexible, rent outside the summer holidays and book a few weeks ahead, when choice is widest and the price softest. Documents, insurance and deposit

You need a valid driving licence, your ID card or passport and a credit card in the main driver’s name. The deposit is blocked on that credit card at pick-up and released after you return the car.
