Bodrum is the stylish heart of Turkey’s Aegean coast: a whitewashed port town with a Crusader castle, and around it a peninsula full of bays, marinas and villages that each have their own mood. Rent a car here and you discover that the best of it lies just outside town, at the end of gently winding coastal lanes. Do you need a car in Bodrum?

Not necessarily for Bodrum town itself, but absolutely for the peninsula. The villages are scattered across the headland: chic Yalikavak with its marina, the fishing village of Gümüslük where you eat with your feet in the water, quiet Gümbet and Bitez with their beaches. By public transport that is cumbersome; with a rental car you leave early, hop from bay to bay and stay where you like it. On top of that, highlights like Ephesus are within day-trip reach.

Picking up at Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV)

Milas-Bodrum (BJV) lies about 36 km northeast of Bodrum town. Most companies have a desk there or a shuttle to a nearby depot. Because of that distance from town, your own car is especially handy: you drive straight to your accommodation instead of waiting for a transfer. In high season booking ahead is wise, as on the spot the choice is thinner and pricier, and an automatic is scarcer in any case.

At pick-up, watch the fuel policy (full-to-full is fairest), photograph any existing damage before you drive off, and ask explicitly how the toll is settled.

The best routes from Bodrum

For the classic first day you stay on the peninsula: a bay in the morning, a village in the afternoon, fresh fish in Gümüslük at sunset. If you want to go further, do Ephesus as a day trip, or drive the narrow road to Datça for a quieter, more unspoilt coast. Pamukkale is doable but long; an overnight stay makes it more pleasant.

How does the toll work in Turkey?

Turkish motorways (otoyol) use a fully electronic toll system, HGS, without toll booths. You drive through and the system reads a device on the windscreen. Around the peninsula you mainly drive on toll-free coastal roads, but for long inland stretches (towards Ephesus or Pamukkale) you take the otoyol and the toll counts. The rental car normally already has an HGS device; the toll is settled afterwards by the rental company, usually via your credit card or the deposit, sometimes with a service fee on top. Ask at pick-up how it is arranged and keep your contract.

When is renting in Bodrum cheapest?

Prices follow the tourist season. In winter and early spring daily rates are lowest; from May it rises, peaking in July and August. If you are flexible, rent outside the summer holidays and book a few weeks ahead, when choice is widest and the price softest. Exact rates vary by period, category and company, so always compare live for your dates.

Documents, insurance and deposit

You need a valid driving licence, your ID card or passport and a credit card in the main driver’s name. The deposit is blocked on that credit card at pick-up and released after you return the car. Look closely at the excess on the basic cover: you can buy it down, usually cheaper in advance through a separate excess policy than at the counter. Make that choice deliberately, beforehand.
