Car rental in Antalya: from the airport onto the Lycian coast

For many travellers Antalya is the gateway to Turkey’s turquoise coast, and it is exactly the kind of destination where a rental car makes the difference between one beach and a whole stretch of coastline. The airport sits close to the city, the motorway carries you in both directions past bays, ruins and mountain villages, and once you leave the resorts behind, a coast opens up that is almost impossible to reach by public transport. This guide helps you start smart from Antalya Airport: where to pick up, which routes are worth it, and the practical things that surprise visitors most.

Do you need a car in Antalya?

For a beach holiday in one resort, not really; for the coast around it, absolutely. The finest spots near Antalya, from the ghost town of Olympos and the eternal flames of the Chimaera to the white bays at Kas and Kalkan, lie kilometres apart at the end of winding coastal roads. No convenient bus goes there, and a taxi for the day is expensive. With your own car you leave early to beat the crowds, stop where it is beautiful, and string several bays together in a single day.

In the centre of Antalya itself the logic flips. The old town of Kaleici is a maze of narrow, largely car-free lanes where a car is of little use. Many travellers therefore pick the car up only when they head out of the city, or park it just outside the historic heart.

Picking up at Antalya Airport (AYT)

Antalya Airport lies about 13 km east of the centre, with an international and a domestic terminal. Most companies work with a desk in the arrivals hall or a free shuttle to a nearby depot. It is one of Turkey’s busiest holiday airports, so in July and August booking ahead is not a luxury but a necessity: on the spot the choice is thinner and pricier.

When you pick up, watch three things that often matter here: the fuel policy (full-to-full is fairer than full-to-empty), the state of the car (photograph any damage before you drive off), and how the toll is settled. That last one is the classic surprise.

The best routes from Antalya

From Antalya you can head in two very different directions, and both are worth the rental.

The western coastal road towards Kas is the classic: a winding route high above the sea, with viewpoints where stopping is almost compulsory. Do not plan it too tightly, because the best stretches will cost you time all by themselves. The eastern side is flatter and quicker, ideal if you want to combine ancient sites like Aspendos and Side with a beach.

How does the toll work in Turkey?

Turkish motorways (otoyol) use a fully electronic toll system, HGS, without toll booths. You simply drive through and the system reads a device or sticker on the windscreen. Around Antalya you often drive toll-free on the coastal roads, but the moment you take a stretch of otoyol, the toll counts.

For a rental car this is the key thing to know in advance: the car normally already has an HGS device, and the toll you run up is settled afterwards by the rental company, usually via your credit card or the deposit, sometimes with a service fee on top of the actual amount. So ask at pick-up how the toll is arranged and whether a fixed service fee applies, and keep your contract.

Parking in Antalya

In and around the old town of Kaleici parking is scarce and the lanes are partly car-free. Use one of the guarded car parks on the edge of the centre (around the marina and the city gate) and continue on foot; that is cheaper and less stressful than circling the narrow streets. At beaches and sights along the coast you will usually find paid car parks; keep some coins or a payment app handy.

When is renting in Antalya cheapest?

Prices track the tourist season closely. In winter and early spring you generally get the lowest daily rates; from May it climbs, peaking in July and August when both demand and price are highest. If you are flexible, rent outside the summer holidays and book a few weeks ahead, when choice is widest and the price softest. Exact rates vary strongly by period, category and company, so always compare live for your dates.

Documents, insurance and deposit

You need a valid driving licence, your ID card or passport and a credit card in the main driver’s name. That credit card is not optional: the deposit is blocked on it at pick-up and released after you return the car. Expect a deposit that can rise depending on the category.

Look closely at the insurance. The basic cover often has a high excess, exactly the amount you lose in case of damage or theft. You can buy that excess down, either with the rental company or in advance through a separate excess policy, which is usually cheaper. Decide this deliberately in advance, not under pressure at the counter.
